CC and BCC Keyboard Shortcuts for gmail

I was wondering how I could add a cc address when I compose an email without having to click on "cc" to do it. Found an article in the forums that explained it:

  • c = compose new mail with only main address
  • d = compose new mail with CC box open
  • b = compose new mail with CC and BCC boxes open.
  • You can also tab to it but it is way down in the tab order so:

  • TAB x 6 + enter for CC
  • TAB x 7 + enter for BCC

    Google Docs Comments

I had an employee send me a bunch of questions in an email. Thing is he attached the questions to the email as an .odt file which comes from open office or something. I was able to open it just fine, I think word pad was what my computer used. I asked myself how to respond and since I use google docs regularly I figured I would copy it over to google docs and then answer the questions inline. After doing that I remembered hearing about the ability to comment inside documents and I have been seeing the icon in the upper left. So I gave it a try and after making a few mistakes it worked like a charm.

For me, I highlighted the entire question, then choose insert/comment or press ctrl-alt-m and you get a box to add a comment. The cool thing is that it not only highlights the question (or whatever you selected when you chose to add a comment) but when you hoover over that selection it "pops-out" the corresponding comment.

These comments allow all the back and forth you would expect and it is easy to see the entire comment history for the document. Reminds me a lot of 37 signals backpack, which we use extensively.

Great new feature to understand. Way to go google.

    Google Voice and Video Settings

I have been using google voice for quite a while. I like it and it works well. I give out that number and forward it to my cell, skype and wherever else I want to take calls. I also like the texting feature. I am a fast text'er when I use a keyboard.

With the new google voice and video chat google voice can ring your chat window (or however it works) but I haven't been using this cause I wasn't sure how to change the settings and modify which microphone and speakers to use. It wasn't a big deal because I like skype so much, but since I bumped into the settings I have used the google interface inside my google apps account for a few phone calls and it works nice.

You can modify those settings by clicking on the gear wheel in the upper right of your gmail (google apps mail) window and choosing mail settings. Then click on the chat tab. You see the section: "Voice and video chat:". Make your changes or at least verify current settings.

    New Domain, Google Apps Setup

I have done this many times, but each time I have to teach myself again exactly how to setup a new domain and create a google apps account to go with it. This is how I do it.

I use godaddy as my registrar so the instructions will be tainted in that direction.

    1. Register a domain if you don't already have one
    2. Open the Domain manager and change the default A record to point to the web server where you will be hosting the website for this domain.
    3. There are several different ways to configure your web server but I use host headers so I can use one ip address for lots of different sites so I just open up the IIS config and change the website that I was already hosting so that it answers to this new domain which is http://davemineer.com.
    4. Begin the setup of Google Apps Free Edition. There is a "Get Started Button". How sad that you can now only get 10 accounts. In my other business I have 200. They changed that in May of 2011. Now the limit is 10 :-(
    5. Follow the steps given on the next several pages for "Google Apps Setup" It is pretty simple. I like to use the DNS verification but you can do whatever, take your pick.
    6. Next you are guided through more setup stuff. If you use godaddy they even have a utility that does all the MX record setup for you. The link is provided as part of the instructions ( https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/google/gmail_login.asp).
    7. The last thing, for now, that I like to do is change the url's for all the services. For example, I add host:mail, points to:ghs.google.com to the cname section of the dns zone file in goddady and then I can access my email from the new account at http://mail.mydomain.com.

Gmail - marking all unread messages as read

I often get behind in my email reading and want to just mark all unread messages as read. But if there are more than just one page it can be difficult if you have to scroll through several pages choosing unread and clicking mark as read. You can choose all and a message will show that says something like "All 100 conversations on this page are selected. Select all 393 conversations in "My Label" "

This is ok, I guess and does the same thing, but you can pull up a label and add this "is: unread" to your search. i.e. "label:mylabel is:unread" then you click search. Now select the dropdown by the checkbox and choose "All" and you get an option at the top of the list of emails that says "All 20 conversations on this page are selected. Select all conversations that match this search"

That specifically targets the unread messages with that label.

Why not just use "All" in the first place. I don't know. But maybe now you can be more specific and match other criteria accurately.
